Real Madrid posted a new video to reveal the secrets of the spectacular Santiago Bernabéu hypogeum, which serves to take care of the grass in the smallest detail. With the help of Hugo Díaz, ATTJ project manager, it is explained how the grass trays are stored in the underground cave gallery of the white coliseum.

In order to put an end to last season's problems on the green carpet, the solution involves exhaustive control with the plates and the hypogeum. For several hours, the Bernabéu pitch, with the help of several workers, begins the process to store the trays in the stadium's underground galleries. The plates, which are every two lines of grass, are submerged under the bottom of the stadium in a slow and long process (about six hours).

"This is crazy. Six trays are kept in the hypogeum and each one of them weighs around 300 and 500 tons depending on the amount of irrigation. Each of them are true monsters," says the stadium's project manager.

The video shows the whole interior of the Madrid temple, including how the plates are submerged beneath the stadium's ground. The procedure of completely protecting the field is one that takes time and effort. According to José María Fernández, head of pitches and gardening at Real Madrid, "the growing conditions are totally artificial in which we seek to simulate as much as possible what it would be like to be outside."

There will be plates beneath the ground that can replicate the ideal weather and lighting conditions for lawn care, which will allow for precise control over the grass's temperature, humidity, and irrigation needs. According to the pitch's head, "16 hours of growing light, where the first and last hours simulate sunrise and sunset to increase and decrease the intensity. As for irrigation, we are watering between one and two times a day, controlling the amount with the different nozzles."

"As we look for the best possible conditions... we have to be careful with the possible diseases that could enter," he assures when it can be seen in the video that all the operators use plastic booties to protect what can be transported from the outside. "We are very careful with the disinfection of machines and clothing. In addition, we use disposable booties so that there is no contact from the outside."
