Twenty minutes. Eighteen questions. That was Álvaro Arbeloa’s first press conference as Real Madrid head coach, a debut packed with messages, gestures, and clear signals about how he intends to handle the media. From the very start, it was obvious that Arbeloa does not plan to go unnoticed.

Right away, he set a distinctive tone by addressing every journalist by name, a gesture reminiscent of Luis de la Fuente’s style. It was not a minor detail. By making eye contact, naming each reporter, and fostering a close, almost familiar atmosphere, Arbeloa sought to humanize his first appearance and build a direct connection with the press.

Although he answered 18 questions, one topic hovered in the air long before he sat down next to Emilio Butragueño, who acted as host of the event: José Mourinho. It was inevitable. Still, it took until question number eleven for the name to surface. When it finally did, Arbeloa smiled even before the question was fully asked. “I was expecting this one,” he admitted calmly. He did not shy away from the comparison, openly embracing the influence of his former coach. “I haven’t spoken to him yet. He was someone who marked me. I’m not afraid of failure, but if I tried to be like Mou, I’d fail spectacularly,” he said with a laugh.

One of the most striking moments came when Arbeloa addressed Real Madrid’s playing style, using irony to deliver a pointed message. He remarked that in 123 years of history, Real Madrid “has never been recognized for playing well.” He then referenced Zinedine Zidane: three Champions League titles in a row, yet “people said he went to water the garden after matches.” Zidane’s famous “flower” became a tool to criticize the persistent lack of appreciation for the club’s football. It was a smiling comment, but a sharp one, revealing that Arbeloa will be combative in the press room when necessary.

At the same time, he avoided unnecessary confrontation. When asked about referees, he declined to take the bait. “I haven’t even coached a match yet and you’re already asking me about that,” he replied.

There was also space for warmth. Arbeloa spoke affectionately about Xabi Alonso, making clear the mutual respect and friendship between them. He also extended a firm show of support to Vinícius Júnior. “We’re lucky to have Vinicius; I want him to shine,” he said, pointing to the Super Cup final as an example of what he expects from the Brazilian.

Arbeloa’s first day set the tone: approachable yet firm, smiling yet sharp, warm but uncompromising. A coach willing to engage, but never to retreat. The next chapter begins tomorrow in Albacete.
