Martín Zubimendi was one of the most discussed midfielders in last summer’s transfer market, particularly after his difficult start to life at Arsenal.
The Gunners signed the Spanish midfielder from Real Sociedad last season for €70 million, hoping he would provide quality and defensive balance in the middle of the pitch. However, his role has become increasingly uncertain, with the Basque midfielder losing his place in Mikel Arteta’s plans.
According to Barcelona-based outlet Sport, Real Madrid are considering a January move for Zubimendi as they look to strengthen their midfield. The Spaniard has been an unused substitute in all five of Arsenal’s competitive matches this season, further highlighting his current situation at the Premier League club.
Zubimendi is reportedly unhappy with his lack of playing time and could push for a move in January if his situation does not improve. Real Madrid are interested in the midfielder, although they are not prepared to pay just any price for him.
The Madrid club reportedly believe a fee close to the €70 million Arsenal paid last year could be within reach. José Mourinho has also given the green light to the possibility of signing the Spain international, but the final decision would depend largely on Arsenal’s asking price.
With Real Madrid looking for a natural holding midfielder, January could provide an opportunity to bring Zubimendi to the Santiago Bernabéu if the circumstances align.
