Real Madrid's search for a new central midfielder continues, with the Champions League clash against Inter highlighting the need for greater depth in the position. The lack of a natural holding midfielder capable of providing defensive balance remains a particular concern.

At present, Aurélien Tchouaméni is the only established option who naturally fits that role. Eduardo Camavinga has yet to fully convince in the position, while Sergio Martínez, who recently arrived in Madrid, is considered more of a playmaker despite also having the qualities to operate as a holding midfielder.

According to TeamTalk journalist Graeme Bailey, Martín Zubimendi's situation at Arsenal could be one to watch. The Spanish midfielder is reportedly not getting the playing time he expected under Mikel Arteta and has found himself on the bench, leaving him unhappy with his situation at the London club.

Zubimendi had expected a more prominent role after placing his trust in Arteta, and his frustration could potentially lead to movement during the winter transfer window.

The World Cup winner remains of interest to Real Madrid, who explored the possibility of signing him during the summer. However, the club could face competition from Chelsea, with Xabi Alonso reportedly a major admirer of his compatriot.

The Chelsea manager already attempted to sign Zubimendi at the beginning of last season, although Florentino Pérez ultimately rejected the move. Now, Chelsea could once again emerge as a rival for the Spanish midfielder if Real Madrid decide to pursue him in January.

With both clubs looking for a defensive midfielder, the race for Zubimendi could become one of the stories to watch during the winter transfer window.
