Real Madrid resumed training with their upcoming league match against Rayo Vallecano in Vallecas on Sunday at 4:15 PM in focus. As part of preparations, Xabi Alonso organized a training match with Álvaro Arbeloa’s Castilla team to test several tactical ideas, not only for the next fixture but also with a medium-term perspective.
One of the most notable moves during the session was Ferland Mendy’s deployment as a center-back. Seeing him start in that role against Rayo would certainly be surprising, but it is a tactical alternative the coach wants to explore. Under Ancelotti, Mendy was almost always a guaranteed starter at left back, even when returning from injury. Now, however, reclaiming that position has become nearly impossible, with Álvaro Carreras established as the starter and Fran García serving as his backup.
Alonso is therefore testing new options for Mendy, who has occasionally filled in at center-back in the past, albeit unintentionally. It won’t be easy for the Frenchman, as Militao remains a guaranteed starter, with Huijsen his most frequent partner despite a difficult outing against Liverpool. Asensio and Rüdiger—who is close to returning but still recovering—are also ahead of him in the pecking order. Still, these recent trials, and perhaps a few minutes in upcoming matches, could give Mendy the chance to convince Alonso that he can be a reliable defensive option.
Mendy rejoined full training on October 14 after suffering a serious injury in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona last April, which required surgery. He returned to the squad six months later for the Champions League match against Juventus and has been on the bench for four games, though he has yet to make his debut under Xabi Alonso.
