Barcelona president Joan Laporta stirred conversation during his appearance on La Llotja del 125 video podcast, where he fielded questions from the club’s youngest members. One question, in particular, stood out: why is Real Madrid considered Barcelona’s greatest rival?
Laporta’s answer quickly gained traction online: "They represent a sense of power, while we represent a sense of freedom. Each club defends its identity. Our rivalry is sustained through mutual respect, especially on an institutional level. We take pride in developing talent through youth football. That’s what defines us. We are more than a club."
His comments didn’t go unnoticed and were brought up during Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso’s press conference ahead of the final group stage match of the Club World Cup at Lincoln Financial Field.
“I can imagine the context in which he said that,” Alonso responded tactfully. “I don’t want to dive into it, but I believe we also value freedom and democracy… and I suppose, yes, they might have a little power too. It works both ways.”
