Kylian Mbappé’s injury has forced Xabi Alonso to rethink Real Madrid’s attacking plans for Sunday’s match against Betis and, almost certainly, for the Spanish Super Cup as well. The French forward’s absence is a major blow, considering he has scored 29 goals in 24 matches this season, accounting for more than half of the team’s total output.

With his main attacking reference unavailable, Xabi Alonso is evaluating several alternatives. The most straightforward option is to deploy Rodrygo Goes as a central striker, a role he is familiar with and one that allows him to offer mobility and link-up play. Rodrygo ended the year in strong form, regaining confidence after ending a nine-month goal drought. This adjustment could also open the door for Franco Mastantuono to start, adding creativity between the lines while maintaining intensity in the press.

Another scenario involves reinforcing the midfield by shifting Federico Valverde to the right wing. This setup would provide greater balance and physical presence, though it would reduce Real Madrid’s attacking weight in the final third. In this case, Rodrygo would once again lead the line with increased responsibility in front of goal.

Xabi Alonso has not ruled out using Gonzalo either, repeating the approach seen during the Club World Cup. It would be the simplest option structurally, with a traditional number nine, but also a bold one given the coach’s recent preference for more conservative choices over promoting youth players.

There is also the possibility of abandoning a fixed striker altogether, opting for a 4-4-2 system with Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo up front. This would offer greater dynamism and speed in transition, although it comes at the cost of a stronger presence inside the box.

The range of options is further limited by the squad’s current situation. Endrick has left on loan to Olympique Lyonnais, while Brahim Díaz remains unavailable as he continues his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations with Morocco.
