Confusion spread through the Santiago Bernabéu after Marc Cucurella came on for Carreras in the 70th minute. Every time the left-back touched the ball, a surprising chorus of boos rang out around the stadium. What initially appeared to be an inexplicable reaction from the home crowd was actually linked to a combination of German supporters in the stands and lingering resentment over Euro 2024.
Real Madrid's security plan had anticipated the arrival of around 2,000 German fans in the upper tier of the north stand. However, the situation inside the stadium proved rather different. Taking advantage of ticket scalpers and alternative channels, hundreds of German supporters reportedly managed to enter other sections of the Bernabéu, blending in with the home fans. Their scattered presence created the impression that the boos were coming from all corners of the stadium rather than from one specific section.
The German supporters have not forgotten what happened in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. During extra time, a shot from Jamal Musiala struck Cucurella's hand, but neither the referee nor VAR awarded a penalty. Spain went on to eliminate the tournament hosts and advance to the semi-finals. The controversy resurfaced months later when UEFA reportedly acknowledged that the incident should have resulted in a penalty.
Although the unexpected reaction initially caught the Bernabéu crowd off guard, the Real Madrid supporters soon responded. As they realized that Cucurella was being targeted by the German fans, sections of the home crowd began applauding whenever he touched the ball, attempting to drown out the hostile reception and show their support for the player.
