Federico Valverde will receive a one-match suspension following his red card in the derby between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

The decision was made by the RFEF Competition Committee, which chose to apply the minimum sanction despite the wording in referee José Luis Munuera Montero’s report. The referee had described the action as involving excessive force and stated that the player had no possibility of playing the ball.

However, the committee did not modify the referee’s interpretation and ultimately imposed the lightest possible punishment for a straight red card.

As a result, Valverde will miss the upcoming La Liga match against Mallorca on April 4 after the international break. The Uruguayan midfielder is currently with the Uruguay national team for two friendlies, facing England at Wembley Stadium and Algeria in Turin.

He will return to club action with Real Madrid for the April 10 match against Girona.

Real Madrid had filed an appeal, arguing that Valverde was attempting to play the ball, despite the match report stating that the ball was too far away. The club insisted that the midfielder arrived late but that the tackle was not dangerous and did not occur at a height that could cause serious harm.
