Fede Valverde will be sidelined for Real Madrid after the club confirmed that the midfielder has suffered a grade 3 sprain in his left ankle.
The Uruguayan sustained the injury during the Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid following a controversial challenge from Kang-In Lee. José Mourinho called for a red card for the tackle, but the referee did not show a dismissal.
As usual, Real Madrid have not provided an estimated recovery time, although a grade 3 ankle sprain is expected to keep Valverde out for at least two weeks.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Fede Valverde by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a grade 3 sprain of his left ankle. His recovery will be monitored,” the club stated in its latest medical report.
Real Madrid had already announced after Sunday’s derby that Valverde had suffered “a severe injury to his left ankle,” but the latest tests have now confirmed the extent of the problem.
Valverde had been included in Uruguay’s squad for the upcoming international fixtures, in what was Diego Forlán’s first official squad announcement as the new coach of La Celeste. However, the midfielder had effectively been ruled out since the end of the derby, and his absence has now been confirmed.
He will therefore miss Uruguay’s matches against Japan on September 24, South Korea on September 28 and India on October 6.
The injury also puts Valverde’s availability for Real Madrid’s first match after the international break in serious doubt. The club are scheduled to face Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on October 10 at 9:00 p.m.
A grade 3 ankle sprain involves significant ligament damage and can cause considerable difficulty when walking. Remarkably, Valverde managed to continue playing after suffering the injury at the end of the first half of the derby.
