UEFA has sanctioned Real Madrid after an incident involving discriminatory behavior by a supporter during the Champions League match against Benfica. The punishment includes a conditional partial closure of the Santiago Bernabéu and a financial fine.
UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body confirmed that 500 seats in the lower south stand of the Santiago Bernabéu will be closed for one match, but the sanction will only be enforced if a similar incident occurs within the next year. In addition, the club has been fined €15,000.
The decision follows an episode before kickoff of the Champions League second leg against Benfica, when a fan in the Fan Zone was recorded making a Nazi salute. Real Madrid’s security staff quickly located the individual, identified him, and removed him from the stadium before the match started.
