The Allianz Arena held a minute’s silence before the Champions League quarter-final second leg between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in memory of José Emilio Santamaría, who passed away at the age of 96. Real Madrid players also wore black armbands in tribute to one of the club’s greatest legends and a prominent figure in world football.
Santamaría joined Real Madrid in 1957 and remained at the club until 1966. During his nine seasons, he made 337 appearances and won four European Cups, one Intercontinental Cup, six La Liga titles, and one Copa del Rey. He was a key member of the team that secured the club’s first European Cup triumphs and helped establish Real Madrid’s historic legacy in the competition.
