The German midfielder started the season as a substitute at San Mamés. Both he and Modric seemed to definitively give way to Fede Valverde, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham. However, Carletto began to realize that Toni could be more than useful alongside three of those four companions in the midfield. Little by little, he began to take over as a starter and confirmed himself as one of the indisputable players of the squad.
