John Obi Mikel’s talent was never questioned during his playing days. The former Chelsea and Nigeria international built a strong reputation at club and international level. However, his recent comments about Toni Kroos have sparked major controversy.
On his YouTube show, The Obi One Podcast, where he regularly discusses football topics with well-known figures, the Nigerian made remarks that quickly went viral. Referring to the Real Madrid legend, Mikel said: “Kroos has been a mediocre midfielder. I was a better player than him, the big difference is that I didn't play for Real Madrid.”
The comments did not go unanswered. Toni Kroos reacted through an Instagram story that referenced the translated quotes, delivering a brief but sharp response: “And why didn't you play for Real Madrid?”
While the contrast between their trophy cabinets is undeniable, the debate quickly shifted away from titles and toward tone and respect. Mikel’s use of the word “mediocre” raised eyebrows, especially considering Kroos’ decorated career at the highest level. The Nigerian also questioned Nacho Fernández’s achievements, suggesting that his five Champions League titles were, in his view, “a bit unfair.”
Kroos’ reply, subtle yet pointed, implied that playing for a club like Real Madrid requires a certain level that not everyone reaches. Rather than escalating the situation, the German handled the exchange with the same composure that defined his career on the pitch. Meanwhile, Mikel once again finds himself at the center of controversy following remarks that many have deemed unnecessary.
