José Mourinho has suffered his first major setback after Real Madrid's promising start to the season. Ahead of their Champions League opener against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu, the Portuguese manager will be without three important players: Arda Güler, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva.
All three are suspended and will therefore miss Real Madrid's first European match of the season. The reason lies in UEFA's disciplinary regulations, as suspensions resulting from red cards carry over into the following season.
Camavinga and Arda will serve the suspensions they received after being sent off against Bayern Munich in their respective final Champions League appearances last season. Bernardo, meanwhile, will serve the suspension from the red card he received against Real Madrid while playing for Manchester City.
The absences of Arda and Bernardo could be particularly problematic for Mourinho, as both have become important figures in his plans and key parts of the midfield he is building.
Mourinho will now have to find alternative solutions for his first major European test of the season. With Tchouaméni still working his way back from injury and Valverde expected to be available, the Real Madrid manager faces an early challenge as he prepares his side to face the reigning Italian champions.
