Just a few days ago, Olympique de Marseille had reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the loan of Dani Ceballos. The deal included a one-year loan with a mandatory buyout clause set between €12 and €14 million, an amount that satisfied Madrid’s demands.
However, Ceballos himself rejected the move at the last minute. While many outlets speculated that Real Betis’ supposed interest was behind his decision, journalist Mario Cortegana of The Athletic clarified the real reason: Marseille simply couldn’t afford his salary. The French side was unable to cover even half of his current wages at Real Madrid, which are around €10 million gross per season—far beyond their financial reach.
Considering that and after speaking with Betis management, Ceballos chose to remain at the Santiago Bernabéu for at least another year. By 2026, the scenario could change, particularly with his contract running until 2027.
