Dean Huijsen’s red card in the Madrid derby produced one of the most discussed moments of the match, while also changing an intriguing disciplinary statistic involving Real Madrid in LaLiga.
The Real Madrid centre-back was sent off against Atlético Madrid, taking the club’s total number of red cards received in the 21st century to exactly the same figure as the number of dismissals shown to their opponents.
According to data shared by Rubén Martín, Real Madrid have recorded 128 expulsions against them and 128 in their favour since 2001, leaving their overall balance at zero.
The comparison with Barcelona makes the statistic even more notable. The Catalan club have recorded 103 red cards for their opponents and 172 against themselves during the same period, giving them a difference of +69.
Huijsen’s dismissal therefore adds another entry to a completely balanced historical record for Real Madrid since the beginning of the 21st century.
The statistic does not assess whether the individual red cards were correct or incorrect. It simply reflects the cumulative number of dismissals involving Real Madrid and their opponents. As a result, it provides historical context following a derby in which refereeing and disciplinary decisions once again became major talking points.
