Florentino Pérez has won his legal battle against El Confidencial over the publication of the Real Madrid president's audio recordings that the digital newspaper released in July 2021.
The sentence orders El Confidencial to pay Florentino one euro (the symbolic sum demanded by the president) as compensation for violating his right to honor and orders the publication to stop running any audio content that directly affects him. Although Pérez's right to privacy was not infringed upon, the judge believes that the recordings are "completely decontextualized" and that the media outlet went beyond its rights to privacy.
The judge, on the other hand, dismisses the part of the lawsuit against José Antonio Abellán considering that the material he recorded, despite being made without consent, corresponds to meetings with journalists and that there is no evidence that proves that Abellán was the author of the filtration. In the audios, recorded in 2006, Florentino Pérez gave his opinion on various personalities related to Real Madrid: Iker Casillas, Raúl, Figo, Guti, Míchel, Vicente del Bosque, Mourinho or Schuster, and others.
