Real Madrid are eager to sign Bayern Munich's left-back in the summer, having failed to adequately replace the legendary Marcelo since his departure. Even though Carlo Ancelotti recently hailed Ferland Mendy as the best full-back in the world when he is in peak form, it is evident that Real Madrid need a more consistent, effective, and reliable left-back.
Davies will be available for €50 million in the summer if Bayern fail to come to an agreement on a contract extension with the young Canadian, who is arguably the best in his position in the world right now.
Real Madrid's interest in Davies stems partly from the fact that, even if he is not an EU citizen, he would not occupy one of their three foreign spots because of the so-called Cotonou Agreement.
The Cotonou Agreement is a political accord between the European Union and the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States. One of its consequences is that nationals of the latter might, in some cases, be considered citizens of the EU. Spain is the most famous nation to have acknowledged this to be the case, which allows La Liga clubs to get around the league's strict foreigner cap.
Real Madrid are not concerned about the foreigner cap at this moment. Players like Eder Militao, Rodrygo, Vinicius and Valverde, who represent South American countries internationally, are all dual nationals, as is Jude Bellingham, who holds an Irish passport.
But when Brazilian wonderkid Endrick arrives, he will occupy one of the three spots; Davies, though Canadian, would not. This is because, having been born in a Ghanaian refugee camp to Liberian parents, both countries having signed the Cotonou Agreement, Davis effectively is considered an EU citizen in Spain.
