Florentino Pérez caused major controversy during Tuesday’s press conference when he announced that Real Madrid would send a detailed report to UEFA regarding the Negreira case and the alleged refereeing corruption linked to payments made by Barcelona to former CTA vice-president José María Enríquez Negreira between 2001 and 2018.
During his speech, Florentino stated: “I've won 7 Champions Leagues and only 7 La Liga titles, which could have been 14, but they were stolen from me...”
Álvaro Arbeloa later reinforced that position when asked about the statement, replying: “Of course, we all know what has happened for twenty years.”
According to reports, Real Madrid internally points to seven league campaigns in which the club believes refereeing decisions played a decisive role in favor of Barcelona.
The first of those seasons was the 2004-05 campaign, when Barcelona finished four points ahead of Real Madrid. The club reportedly believes refereeing decisions throughout the season favored Barça following Joan Laporta’s support for Ángel Villar in the Spanish Football Federation elections.
The 2009-10 season is also highlighted. Despite collecting 96 points under Manuel Pellegrini, Real Madrid finished behind Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona side. The club reportedly complained about refereeing decisions in matches against Osasuna, Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla.
The 2010-11 campaign under José Mourinho is another season frequently mentioned. Real Madrid finished with 92 points but ended four behind Barcelona. Mourinho repeatedly criticized refereeing criteria and disciplinary decisions throughout the season.
Real Madrid also points to the 2014-15 title race, decided by just two points, and the 2015-16 campaign under Zinedine Zidane, where the club believes the difference in penalties awarded heavily influenced the final standings.
The 2020-21 season is similarly cited due to controversial refereeing decisions in matches against Sevilla and Atlético Madrid.
Finally, Real Madrid also references the 2024-25 campaign, claiming key refereeing decisions in matches against Espanyol, Atlético Madrid and Osasuna significantly impacted the title race against Barcelona.
The Negreira case continues to generate major tension across Spanish football, while Real Madrid prepares to formally present its dossier to UEFA.
