Real Madrid’s injury problems have been compounded by another setback, as Aurélien Tchouaméni will miss next week’s La Liga clash against Villarreal due to suspension.
The French midfielder was shown a yellow card half an hour into the match after a reckless challenge from behind on Levante’s Carlos Álvarez. Referee Sesma Espinosa had no hesitation in booking Real Madrid’s number 14.
That caution was Tchouaméni’s fifth of the league season, meaning he will be unavailable for one of the toughest away fixtures on the calendar. His suspension comes at a delicate moment, with Real Madrid set to face a Villarreal side firmly involved in the battle for the top positions.
The absence leaves Álvaro Arbeloa without one of his most trusted players. Since the early stages of the season under Xabi Alonso, and now under Arbeloa following the Copa del Rey tie in Albacete, Tchouaméni has been a constant presence in the starting eleven. Only Courtois, with 33 starts, has featured more, while Tchouaméni, Valverde and Vinicius have each started 31 matches.
