After a short stint with Real Madrid in both the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and Spain’s Liga Endesa, 17-year-old Sidi Gueye has chosen to pursue a college basketball path, committing to the University of Arizona.
Speaking to ESPN, the promising Senegalese forward/center said, “Coach [Tommy] Lloyd is one of the top coaches in college, and he has coached many international players before. He made me feel comfortable and showed me how I can improve and produce in his system.”
Gueye emerged from Real Madrid’s youth ranks, where he notably led the team to victory in the 2024 Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament. His time with the senior squad included brief appearances in Europe’s top competition—logging just under five minutes over three EuroLeague games, with his only points coming from two free throws against Crvena Zvezda at WiZink Center on October 24.
In the Spanish ACB league, Gueye played four games, averaging 1.3 points, 1.0 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, and 0.3 steals per game under coach Chus Mateo.
“Playing for Real Madrid was amazing,” Gueye reflected. “They’re a great organization and helped me a lot with my development. I’m excited to take the next step in the United States. So many top players are heading to college now—it made my decision easier. I want to keep improving, and college feels like the right place for that.”
