Real Madrid’s pursuit of Nico Schlotterbeck is beginning to gain real momentum. With several defensive targets dropping off the club’s shortlist in recent months, the German international has emerged as one of the most serious candidates to strengthen the back line.
Some of the previously mentioned options are no longer available. Dayot Upamecano has renewed his contract with Bayern, Marc Guéhi has joined Manchester City, and Ibrahima Konaté has not fully convinced the decision-makers at Valdebebas. As a result, Schlotterbeck’s name is now attracting growing attention within the club.
Journalist Matteo Moretto addressed the situation on Thursday through his account on X. According to him, “Borussia Dortmund want to try to extend Nico Schlotterbeck’s contract, which expires in 2027, but the defender is aware of Real Madrid’s interest and is taking his time.”
Moretto also revealed that “Schlotterbeck is very attracted to the idea of playing for Real Madrid.” While in football things rarely develop in a straightforward way, the situation suggests that the door to the Santiago Bernabéu could open for the Dortmund defender next summer, provided the German club does not demand an excessive transfer fee.
Real Madrid are expected to sign at least one center-back this summer, and the possibility of two arrivals cannot be ruled out. The contracts of David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger are approaching their final stages, Dean Huijsen continues to raise doubts with his performances, and Éder Militão is still recovering after suffering his third serious injury. Meanwhile, Raúl Asencio has been dealing with several minor physical issues.
With so many uncertainties in defense, strengthening the position has become one of the club’s top priorities ahead of next season.
