Jesús Gil Manzano has once again found himself at the heart of controversy after showing Huijsen a controversial red card during the Real Sociedad–Real Madrid clash. Real Madrid Television revealed that Negreira had once advised Barcelona to “take great care” of their relationship with the Extremaduran referee due to his “future potential.” This detail surfaces in the midst of the ongoing investigation into Barcelona’s payments of €8.4 million to José María Enríquez Negreira, who was then the vice president of Spain’s Referees Committee.
The dismissal came after Huijsen brought down Oyarzabal in midfield. With Militão positioned right alongside him and no clear goal-scoring opportunity in sight, Real Madrid players were stunned when Gil Manzano opted to show a straight red card.
Xabi Alonso, visibly furious, sprang from the bench to challenge the decision. Many expected VAR official Jorge Figueroa Vázquez to intervene and advise Gil Manzano to review the play on the pitchside monitor. However, to general disbelief, no such review took place, and the referee’s decision stood. Huijsen was forced to leave the field in the 32nd minute.
Adding to the controversy, Xabi Alonso was cautioned with a yellow card for his protests. The decision significantly influenced the course of the match, yet Real Madrid still managed to overcome the setback thanks to a brilliant performance from Kylian Mbappé, who once again inspired the team to victory. Still, the spotlight remains on Gil Manzano, whose call once more left Madrid feeling unfairly treated.
