The Technical Committee of Referees addressed several controversial refereeing decisions from last weekend in its regular ‘Review Time’ segment, including the disputed incident from the Alavés vs Real Madrid match, where Madrid players protested a penalty not given for a challenge on Vinicius.
The Committee publicly backed VAR official González Fuertes, who was in charge of video assistance at Mendizorroza and has been strongly criticized by Real Madrid for failing to recommend a review of the incident. According to the CTA, there was no reason for VAR to intervene.
A spokesperson for the refereeing body explained the reasoning behind the decision: “In situations involving contact, everything depends on the level of intensity. The force of contact between two players cannot always be measured objectively; it relies on the referee’s interpretation. It is the on-field referee who must judge whether the defender’s action caused the attacker to fall based on what they observe.”
She further clarified the Committee’s stance: “The CTA considers this action to be a matter of interpretation. Since it was not a clear and obvious error, VAR intervention was not warranted.”
