After nearly 25 years, Real Oviedo is officially back in Spain’s First Division. The road hasn’t been easy: the Asturian side has endured financial ruin, multiple ownership changes, and a relegation to Spain’s third tier. But as the football world celebrates Oviedo’s return, an old story involving Real Madrid has resurfaced, and gone viral once again.

In 2012, Oviedo was on the verge of collapse. Facing a €1.9 million capital shortfall, the club was at serious risk of disappearing altogether. That’s when Real Madrid stepped in. The club purchased €100,000 worth of Oviedo shares, not to keep them, but to help. Once acquired, the shares were promptly transferred to the local city council to support the club’s long-term stability.

In addition to the financial contribution, Real Madrid also sent a signed Iker Casillas jersey to be auctioned, helping Oviedo raise further funds during one of its darkest hours. This symbolic gesture by Los Blancos, led by Florentino Pérez, is still remembered today as a turning point.

Now, thirteen years later, Oviedo has finally completed its comeback. Coached by Veljko Paunovic, they earned promotion after a dramatic playoff final against Mirandés. For many, their return is not only a football story; it’s a story of resilience, loyalty, and second chances. Oviedo currently ranks 19th in Spain’s all-time standings, a reminder of their historic place in La Liga.

Real Madrid’s act of solidarity exemplifies the club’s commitment to Spanish football. Oviedo fans won’t forget it. And now, La Liga welcomes back one of its most beloved teams.
