Following the Euroleague’s decision allowing Israeli basketball clubs to resume hosting European competition matches in their home country from December 1, it has been confirmed that Real Madrid will not play any of its scheduled games in Israel this season — neither against Maccabi nor Hapoel in Tel Aviv.
The calendar makes this clear: Madrid will face Maccabi this Wednesday (Matchday 5) in Belgrade at 8:05 PM, and then meet Hapoel in Sofia on November 25 at 7:00 PM — both games taking place before Israeli teams return to their home arenas. Unless the sides meet again in a potential play-in or playoff round, Real Madrid will avoid traveling to Tel Aviv this campaign.
Addressing the matter, Sergio Scariolo emphasized the reasoning behind such scheduling: “It’s an assessment based solely on the safety of traveling teams. In sports, the only criterion for these kinds of decisions is ensuring the safety of players, teams, and fans. If international political and sporting authorities consider Tel Aviv safe for competition after December 1, as athletes we must trust those decisions — even if they may seem somewhat illogical,” he explained.
