Real Madrid are actively monitoring the right-back position, with the possibility of entering the transfer market gaining strength if Dani Carvajal does not renew his contract and decides to leave the club. Inside the executive offices at the Santiago Bernabéu, every option is being evaluated, ranging from promoting youth academy players to relying on the versatility of experienced first-team members.
Since last season, and now under Álvaro Arbeloa, Real Madrid have grown accustomed to using temporary solutions at right-back. No player has managed to fully establish himself in the role as Carvajal once did. Initially, Lucas Vázquez filled the position, followed by Fede Valverde, who has frequently been deployed there despite it not being his natural role. The arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared to offer a definitive solution, but injuries and inconsistency have prevented that option from settling permanently.
Valverde has been the most used player at right-back by a significant margin, featuring there in 17 matches so far this season. He is followed by Trent, whose availability has been limited by injuries, Asensio, who has covered the position in four matches, and academy product David Jiménez, who played there twice in the Copa del Rey. Of these options, only two are natural right-backs, highlighting the lack of depth should Carvajal depart.
Carvajal’s importance extends beyond the pitch, as his leadership and experience are key elements within the dressing room. If the captain were to leave for Saudi Arabia or Qatar this summer, Real Madrid would be forced to seriously consider a move in the transfer market. A long-term solution is needed to avoid continuing to play Valverde or Asensio out of position, a scenario that carries clear tactical risks for the team.
