Real Madrid remains resolute in its pursuit to overhaul the current refereeing system and is prepared to take all possible legal actions to achieve this. The club’s determination was evident in the letter sent to both the Federation and the Higher Sports Council, including a formal request for the VAR audio from two specific incidents during their recent match against Espanyol. These include the foul on Mbappé, which only resulted in a yellow card, and Vinicius’ disallowed goal due to an alleged foul by Mbappé.
Real Madrid plans to take the case to a criminal court if their request is ignored. The complaint will leverage statements made by Medina Cantalejo, the head of the Technical Committee of Referees, during an interview with Josep Pedrerol. Cantalejo acknowledged that the controversial foul on Mbappé was something "everyone saw," further fueling Madrid's argument that such an obvious decision should not have been missed by the referee and VAR officials.
The legal team is already preparing to file a lawsuit and lodge a formal protest with FIFA over the Espanyol match and the Federation’s refusal to release the VAR audios. Real Madrid's leadership, including President Florentino Pérez and his board, remains unfazed by outside criticism, particularly from Atlético de Madrid, their next league opponent. The club believes that many other teams quietly disagree with the current refereeing system but remain silent, displaying what Madrid views as an act of cynicism.
