Real Madrid is in mourning following the passing of its longest-standing and most symbolic member, Sergio Nieto Díaz Albo, who died peacefully at the age of 100 years and 266 days. Despite feeling slightly more fatigued in recent days, his family confirmed that he experienced no suffering and departed in peace, surrounded by loved ones and fulfilled by a lifetime of devotion to the club he adored.
Sergio became a club member in 1932, thanks to his father, and for over nine decades remained a passionate supporter of Los Blancos. He witnessed all 15 European Cups and countless historic moments, from the legendary 11-1 victory over Barcelona in 1943 to the iconic final against Fiorentina in 1957. His pride in Madrid’s all-Spanish “Ye-Yé” team and the club’s sustained greatness over the decades was unwavering.
In September 2024, Real Madrid celebrated his 100th birthday by gifting him a jersey bearing his name and the number 1, an emotional gesture that left a lasting impression. He was also featured in AS with a heartfelt centennial tribute and shared a touching reunion with Rayo Vallecano's No. 1 member, Rafael Garrido, ahead of the Vallecas derby last December.
Sergio Nieto was a distinguished member of Real Madrid’s exclusive “Club of 100,” which honors the institution’s first 100 members. His life embodied the spirit, loyalty, and history of Real Madrid.
His remains will rest in Room 21 of the San Isidro Funeral Home through Monday, with burial scheduled at the Almudena Cemetery later that afternoon.
Rest in peace, Sergio. A true Madridista, forever in our hearts.
