The Champions League transformed the European Cup, but Real Madrid have continued to dominate the competition. In “Rey: Gloria del Real Madrid en la Champions League,” author Julián Carpintero revisits the club’s most memorable moments in the modern era, covering three decades marked by nine titles. The book is structured around 45 iconic moments, symbolizing one for each minute of a football match.
“The idea came to me while I was waiting for the birth of my daughter and reading Stefan Zweig’s Stellar Moments of Humankind. Real Madrid had just won their 15th league title and it inspired me,” Carpintero explained. The author previously reflected on the 2007 league triumph under Fabio Capello in his earlier work.
The book highlights some of the club’s most celebrated moments, including Redondo’s backheel at Old Trafford, Ronaldo Nazario’s hat-trick at the same stadium, Benzema’s skill at the Calderón, and Vinicius’s performance at Anfield in 2023. It also covers the influence of Kroos and Modric, as well as the nine Champions League finals won during this period. The story begins with Raúl’s hat-trick against Ferencvaros in 1995 and concludes with the 15th title secured at Wembley.
Beyond celebrating Real Madrid’s European success, the book also serves a charitable purpose, with proceeds directed toward childhood cancer research projects supported by the Aladina Foundation.
