Real Madrid has officially requested that their La Liga opener against Osasuna, initially scheduled for August 19, be postponed to October 29. According to reports from Cadena SER and AS, the club submitted a letter to LaLiga outlining the request, noting that Osasuna and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have agreed to the proposed new date.
However, LaLiga responded by stating it had not yet received the letter but would review the arguments once it arrives. The organization emphasized that it would follow the collective bargaining agreement, along with existing competition and federation regulations. If LaLiga refuses to reschedule the match, the matter could be escalated to the Competition Committee.
The push for postponement is driven by Real Madrid’s participation in the Club World Cup semifinals, which leaves little time for an adequate offseason rest and preseason. The AFE players’ union has backed the club, advocating for the minimum three weeks of vacation and preseason stipulated in player agreements. Despite LaLiga’s effort to push Madrid’s match to the last slot of the round on an unusual Tuesday, the club and the union consider this insufficient.
