A new chapter begins for Real Madrid basketball. Despite having one year left on his contract and recently winning the Endesa League with a dominant run, 30 wins in their last 31 games, Chus Mateo has been dismissed as head coach. His departure paves the way for the expected arrival of Sergio Scariolo.
According to journalist Noelia Gómez, Mateo was informed of the decision during a meeting at Valdebebas. Assistant coaches like Paco Redondo will also depart. The move reflects discontent with the team’s performance in the EuroLeague, where Madrid—despite one of the highest budgets—finished seventh in the regular season and failed to reach the Final Four.
While Mateo felt confident about continuing, publicly expressing so during the team’s title celebrations at La Fonteta and in official visits to Madrid institutions, the club had already made its decision. The departure of Juan Carlos Sánchez, a key backer of Mateo, further sealed his fate. With Sergio Rodríguez poised to take over as sporting director, the coaching change is just the beginning of a broader restructuring.
Chus Mateo’s tenure was not short on silverware. He leaves as the fourth most decorated coach in Real Madrid history, with six titles: 1 EuroLeague, 2 La Liga titles, 2 Super Cups and 1 Copa del Rey.
Mateo stepped into a difficult role, succeeding the legendary Pablo Laso, but stayed true to the team's identity and continued delivering results. Still, Madrid believes a new direction is needed to reclaim dominance in Europe, and for that, they've turned to Sergio Scariolo.
