Postal voting has long been a controversial issue in Real Madrid elections, particularly since the 1990s, with repeated complaints about alleged irregularities and manipulation. Several candidates, including Alfonso Ussía after his defeat to Ramón Mendoza in 1991 and Florentino Pérez in later years, have publicly questioned the system. Pérez himself recently referred to a past election in which, as he put it, “the dead” cast votes.
In 2006, concerns over postal voting in a five-candidate election led a judge to annul all mail-in ballots, affecting around 10,000 votes. The case highlighted the weight of this voting method in the club’s electoral process.
Following that controversy, Real Madrid reinforced its postal voting system to ensure greater security and transparency, introducing strict procedures and notarial oversight intended to guarantee integrity beyond even general election standards.
The club now relies on a designated notary to oversee the process. Members opting for postal voting must first request the required documentation, which can be collected at Valdebebas or delivered to their home address. They must then submit their ballot through a notary of their choice, which is subsequently sent to the club-appointed notary, Cruz Gonzalo López-Müller Gómez, who safeguards the votes via post office box 6031.
The Real Madrid Electoral Board covers notary costs. In addition, notaries are available at the campaign offices of both candidates, located at Rafael Salgado 3 (Riquelme) and 11 (Florentino), to assist members who have already requested their voting documentation. Information is also available through the club’s official website as well as on the candidates’ platforms, florentinoperez.com and legadoyfuturo.com.
Postal voting is permitted only until midnight on June 3, allowing time for Correos to deliver ballots to the club’s notary before election day on June 7, when in-person voting will take place.
It is also important to note that members who request postal voting, even if they ultimately do not use it, will not be eligible to vote in person on election day.
