Xabi Alonso’s future at Real Madrid is now more uncertain than at any other point in the season. According to the latest reports, the coach from Tolosa appears closer to leaving than staying, and the upcoming match against Manchester City is being viewed as his final opportunity to save his job at the Bernabéu. This is the conclusion drawn from information published by El Mundo.
The same newspaper also states that shortly after the 0-2 defeat against Celta Vigo, Real Madrid’s board of directors held an emergency meeting during the early hours of the night to address Xabi Alonso’s immediate situation. Some members even pushed for a coaching change before the Champions League showdown against Manchester City, although the club ultimately decided that the Basque manager will stay in charge for that decisive encounter against Pep Guardiola’s team.
El Mundo adds that the discussion regarding possible replacements for Xabi Alonso has already begun. Two major names were mentioned during the meeting: Zinedine Zidane and Jürgen Klopp.
Zidane reportedly has a verbal agreement to take over the French national team after the World Cup, once Didier Deschamps steps down following more than a decade in charge. As for Klopp, he stepped away from coaching in 2024 after leaving Liverpool and now occupies a managerial role within Red Bull. Both Zidane and Klopp have been repeatedly linked to Real Madrid in past years whenever speculation about the bench has surfaced, so it is no surprise that their names have reappeared given the current situation.
