Real Madrid have issued a strong statement in response to Javier Tebas following the LaLiga president’s criticism of José Mourinho and the club’s complaints about the refereeing after the Madrid derby.

Mourinho strongly criticised the refereeing after Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid, questioning the appointment of referee Ortiz Arias and VAR official Daniel Trujillo. He also accused Trujillo of having a long history in Real Madrid matches.

Tebas subsequently responded to the controversy, prompting Real Madrid to release an official statement attacking the LaLiga president’s conduct.

"In response to the statements made by the president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas Medrano, Real Madrid CF wishes to state the following: Our club considers it intolerable that the president of LaLiga uses his institutional position to continue discrediting and attacking Real Madrid in the way he does in each of his public appearances. It is deeply concerning that someone who has the responsibility to represent and protect the interests of all LaLiga clubs continues to be repeatedly obsessed with Real Madrid, making our club a constant target of his public attacks," the club stated.

Real Madrid also took particular issue with Tebas commenting on the club’s sporting strategy.

"His latest intervention is especially serious and incomprehensible, unbecoming of a responsible manager, because he makes it while commenting on an article by an independent journalist in a digital publication. However, he reacts against our club by even daring to assess our sporting strategy, something that is completely absurd and irresponsible."

The club then accused Tebas of damaging the image of LaLiga and Spanish football through his public remarks.

"It is utterly astonishing that the president of LaLiga dedicates his time and personal channels to constantly trying to publicly discredit Real Madrid, instead of contributing, from his position of responsibility, to building trust in the institutions that must guarantee the impartiality of the competition. In this way, he continues to damage the image of our competition and of Spanish football worldwide."

Real Madrid concluded their statement by calling for a change in leadership at LaLiga and stressing what they believe the president’s role should represent.

"Given this inappropriate and prolonged behavior, we believe that professional football in Spain urgently needs a leader capable of managing it and developing its full potential while upholding the fundamental duty of neutrality. It needs someone who understands the nature of their role, because the president of LaLiga is not the owner of the competition, but a manager serving the clubs that comprise it and entrust its direction to them. The clubs need someone who will serve this mission with honesty," the statement concluded.

The exchange marks another escalation in the ongoing dispute between Real Madrid and the LaLiga president following the controversial Madrid derby. Tebas has publicly rejected Real Madrid’s complaints over refereeing, while the club has now directly challenged his comments and his role as LaLiga president.
