Real Madrid have distanced themselves from the current refereeing reform project led by the Royal Spanish Football Federation, deepening an already clear institutional rift.
The club, represented in early talks by José Ángel Sánchez, ultimately chose not to take part in the final agreement. The general manager reportedly informed Rafael Louzán that Madrid would not be involved in the concluding stage of the project.
Tensions escalated further after the recent draw against Girona, particularly due to the refereeing performance of Javier Alberola Rojas. Within the club, there is a growing sense of frustration, with officials believing the competition is being affected by inconsistent refereeing decisions.
The fallout was also visible during the Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich, where Louzán attended alongside Aleksander Ceferin. However, the Federation president was notably not seated alongside UEFA’s top official, reflecting the current distance between the institutions.
Inside the club, there is a belief that the issues go beyond isolated mistakes. The handling of similar incidents in the Girona match—particularly those involving Kylian Mbappé—has reinforced the perception of inconsistency. While Madrid acknowledge their own shortcomings on the pitch, they see refereeing as a major factor behind recent setbacks.
For now, the club’s stance is firm: until there is a comprehensive reform of the refereeing system, the gap between Real Madrid and the Federation is expected to grow even wider.
