David Alaba marked his 33rd birthday away from home, recovering from a long-term injury with no clear return date. As things stand, the Austrian defender’s future at Real Madrid is growing increasingly uncertain.

According to AS, Alaba has fallen to fifth in the center-back hierarchy, behind Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen, Eder Militão (who is close to full fitness), and Raúl Asencio. The emergence of 17-year-old academy prospect Joan Martínez, whose promotion to the first team is being fast-tracked, has further narrowed Alaba’s chances of regaining a regular role.

Although Alaba’s contract runs until 2026, Real Madrid reportedly has no intention of offering a renewal. The former Bayern Munich man is one of the club’s highest-paid players, with a total annual cost of approximately €19.5 million. In the context of the club’s plans to reduce the wage bill, this figure is seen as unsustainable for a player with diminishing playing time.

While Alaba remains a respected figure in the dressing room, the outlook suggests that his time in white may be winding down sooner than expected.
