Real Madrid basketball has decided to remain in the EuroLeague and is set to sign a new long-term agreement, ending speculation over a possible move to a future NBA-backed competition in Europe, according to information from EFE.
The decision was not straightforward, as differing views reportedly existed within the club. However, the preference for continuity within the current European basketball structure ultimately prevailed. The move is expected to have significant sporting and financial implications for the club.
The EuroLeague is currently working on a major restructuring plan that would increase the influence of its founding clubs. Under the proposed model, those teams would effectively secure long-term participation in the competition.
A key part of the project is a financial package worth around €400 million. Real Madrid and the other founding clubs could each receive approximately €30 million as part of the agreement, further strengthening their commitment to the competition.
At the same time, the EuroLeague is exploring an expansion of its format. Plans include increasing the number of participating teams to 24 for the 2027-28 season, with the possibility of further growth to 30 clubs in the future.
Such changes would significantly reshape the competition, leading to more games and a more demanding calendar. The long-term objective is to adopt certain structural elements similar to those used in the NBA while preserving the competition's European identity.
