Real Madrid's basketball section is also undergoing significant changes following a disappointing season in which the team failed to win a single title.
The club reached the finals of both the Copa del Rey and the EuroLeague but fell short in each competition. The disappointment was compounded by a first-round elimination in the Liga Endesa playoffs against La Laguna Tenerife, despite entering the postseason as strong favorites.
According to MARCA, Florentino Pérez decided to keep Sergio Scariolo as head coach after securing victory in the presidential elections. However, the season's fallout has led to important changes behind the scenes.
Sergio "Chacho" Rodríguez has stepped down from his role overseeing the basketball section. His position will now be filled by Juan Carlos Sánchez, who returns after previously holding the role until 2025. Sánchez was part of one of the most successful periods in the club's basketball history, although his tenure was also marked by the controversial departure of Pablo Laso.
His return could have implications for other figures within the section. The future of Sergio Llull remains uncertain, while several members of Rodríguez's team are also leaving the club, including Pocius. Meanwhile, the situations of Rudy Fernández and Felipe Reyes have yet to be clarified, although both could remain involved.
MARCA reports that Juan Carlos Sánchez spent the season acting as an external advisor to Florentino Pérez and submitted reports recommending his return to the position.
According to the same source, José Ángel Sánchez informed Sergio Rodríguez last Thursday of the decision to bring Juan Carlos Sánchez back. Rodríguez subsequently chose not to remain within the club's structure, reportedly unwilling to work alongside someone with whom he had a strained relationship during his playing career.
It remains to be seen whether these changes will lead to further restructuring within Real Madrid's basketball department.
