The name Laurie Cunningham once again resonated in Vallecas, as Spanish football honored his legacy 36 years after his passing during the Rayo Vallecano vs. Real Madrid match on La Liga matchday 12.
Sergio Cunningham, the son of the late English footballer, and his mother were presented with two commemorative jerseys—one from each club—featuring Laurie Cunningham’s name and number. The shirts were handed over by Pirri, honorary president of Real Madrid, and Martín Presa, president of Rayo Vallecano. The initiative, launched by Real Madrid, celebrated Cunningham’s contribution to both clubs. “Butragueño called me and I spoke with him to confirm it,” Sergio revealed to MARCA.
Both were also invited to watch the match from the presidential box. A ceremonial kickoff had been planned as part of the tribute but, due to protocol issues, it could not be carried out—just as happened in the same fixture last year.
