The scheduling chaos surrounding the new La Liga season shows no signs of easing. Despite Real Madrid’s progress to the Club World Cup semifinals, leaving them with almost no time for a proper preseason, LaLiga has confirmed that their league debut will not be postponed. The AFE (Association of Spanish Footballers) is now in talks with Real Madrid to prepare a joint response to LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), with the aim of delaying the opening match against Osasuna.
LaLiga has scheduled the clash for Tuesday, August 19, the latest fixture of the first matchday and on a rare weekday slot. While the league believes this gives Los Blancos more time to recover, both the club and the players’ union argue it still falls short. Under the current labor agreement, players are entitled to three weeks of vacation and another three weeks of preseason preparation, a timeline that’s now impossible to meet given Madrid’s Club World Cup commitments.
It remains to be seen how Real Madrid and AFE will coordinate their next steps. The possibility of intervention from the Competition Committee is also on the table, should the conflict escalate.
