The Super League has taken the first formal step toward filing its multi-billion-euro lawsuit against UEFA, launching the mandatory preliminary procedures required before submitting a claim to court. Together, Real Madrid and A22 are seeking more than €4.5 billion in damages, with Real Madrid’s claim representing the largest portion. Florentino Pérez had already anticipated this move during the General Assembly, and one day later, A22 released a statement detailing the basis of the legal action.
“A22 Sports Management announces that on November 21, 2025, it initiated the mandatory MASC procedures under Spanish law, prior to starting a legal process against UEFA for the damages caused by UEFA’s abuse of its dominant position as the monopolistic operator of European cross-border club competitions,” the company stated.
The statement also recalled the landmark ruling from December 21, 2023, when the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice of the European Union declared that UEFA had abused its monopoly in the market for cross-border club football competitions, violating EU competition law. According to A22, that ruling required UEFA to open the market to external organizers such as themselves.
A22 stressed that, despite clear decisions from multiple European courts, including the CJEU and a Spanish appeals court, UEFA continues to apply regulations that contradict these rulings. They added that UEFA even implemented new rules in 2024 that go against the judgments. As a result, both clubs involved and A22 are now seeking significant compensation.
