Real Madrid remain active in the Club World Cup but continue to work quietly behind the scenes on key transfer deals, one of the most pressing being Álvaro Carreras. The Spanish full-back is expected to become a Real Madrid player in the coming weeks, especially now that Benfica has been eliminated from the tournament and Carreras has already bid farewell to the Portuguese club, with no intention of playing for them again.

According to Guillermo Rai of The Athletic, Real Madrid are pushing to finalize Carreras’ signing in early July. With Benfica’s exit at the hands of Chelsea on June 28, negotiations are now expected to accelerate significantly. Notably, manager Xabi Alonso had already planned to include Carreras in the squad for the Club World Cup, but Benfica president Rui Costa refused to allow the transfer before the competition.

While The Athletic did not specify a final figure, the expected cost of the deal is believed to be no less than €50 million, including both fixed and performance-related variables. What remains to be seen is whether Real Madrid will activate Carreras’ release clause or try to reach a direct agreement with Benfica—known for their tough negotiating stance in past transfer dealings.

Carreras is widely expected to become Madrid’s starting left-back next season, with the club aiming to close the deal swiftly now that all obstacles appear to have been removed.
