Spain will compete at the upcoming World Cup without a single Real Madrid player in the squad for the first time in history.
The unprecedented situation became official after Spain coach Luis de la Fuente announced his final 26-man list at the Movistar Space in Madrid and decided to leave out Dean Huijsen, who had been Real Madrid’s only realistic option for representation in the squad.
Dani Carvajal was already unavailable after being excluded from the preliminary 55-man list due to the serious knee injury he suffered in October 2024 and the ongoing recovery process that followed.
Fran García and Gonzalo had been considered possible emergency alternatives, but neither made the final selection.
As a result, Spain will head to a World Cup without Real Madrid representation for the first time across the country’s 16 appearances in the tournament.
The squad selection also recalls the situation during Euro 2020, played in 2021, when Luis Enrique named a Spain squad without any Real Madrid players for a major international competition.
Before that, the only similar case came at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, where Spain won the silver medal without any Real Madrid footballers in the team.
