Pope Leo XIV publicly revealed his football preference during his flight from Rome to Madrid.
Shortly before landing in the Spanish capital, the pontiff was asked by a journalist whether he supports Real Madrid or Barcelona, a question that frequently sparks debate among football fans in Spain.
Rather than avoiding the topic, Leo XIV responded with a light-hearted answer that balanced his institutional role with his personal preference.
" That's easy. The Pope supports all teams... but Robert Prevost supports Real Madrid, " he said, referring to himself by his birth name.
With the remark, the head of the Catholic Church drew a distinction between the neutrality expected of the papacy and his personal support for Real Madrid.
