Only eight teams remain in the Club World Cup, and the quarterfinal matchups are now set. According to Opta’s supercomputer, Chelsea have emerged as the new tournament favorites, with a 26.8% chance of lifting the trophy.
Enzo Maresca’s side will face Palmeiras in the quarterfinals. Should they progress, they would meet the winner of Fluminense vs. Al Hilal in the semifinals. The unexpected early exits of Manchester City and Inter Milan have significantly cleared Chelsea's path to the final, contributing to their rising title odds.
Chelsea have seen their chances soar as the tournament has progressed. Before the competition began, Opta ranked them sixth, with just an 8.4% chance of winning. That figure has now more than tripled.
Paris Saint-Germain, once considered pre-tournament favorites, now hold the second-best odds at 24.9%. Luis Enrique’s men face a more difficult road: a quarterfinal clash with Bayern Munich, followed by a potential semifinal against the winner of Real Madrid vs. Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid now rank third with a 16.9% chance of claiming the title, rising from their initial 9.8% projection. Xabi Alonso’s team continues to gain confidence and form.
The top five in Opta’s model are all European teams. Al-Hilal, fresh off their upset of Manchester City, follow with a 4.3% chance. Fluminense and Palmeiras round out the list with the lowest probabilities of becoming champions.
