Just days before the Champions League quarter-finals, warnings from Germany continue to surface about what awaits Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabéu. After Sami Khedira, another German legend has highlighted the challenge of facing Real Madrid in these decisive moments.
That figure is Oliver Kahn, former Bayern and Germany goalkeeper, who knows the Bernabéu well after multiple encounters, including being part of the squad that secured the club’s first-ever win at the stadium.
In his interview, Kahn delivered a clear warning to Bayern players about the unique intensity of the venue. “Ninety minutes at the Bernabéu are more exhausting than anywhere else.”
He emphasized the psychological pressure generated by the atmosphere. “The atmosphere in Madrid is much more intense than in Barcelona: you feel like everything is pushing you down. The atmosphere can be intimidating. And now, with the roof, that’s even more noticeable.”
Despite Álvaro Arbeloa’s side facing criticism at times this season, Kahn underlined why they remain such a dangerous opponent. “Real Madrid has come from a period in which it has had to overcome criticism, instability, a change of coach… And suddenly it gets the victory against Manchester City and realizes and says ‘we can turn the season around’. That is precisely what makes Real Madrid so dangerous.”
