New revelations have surfaced in the Negreira case after the testimony of the former vice-president of referees’ son, who provided an unusually personal account of what he knew and when he knew it.
Negreira’s son told the court that for years he was completely unaware of any financial relationship between his father and FC Barcelona. According to his testimony, his father had always insisted that, from an ethical standpoint, he would never accept money from a football club due to his role within the referees’ committee.
“I had no idea Barcelona paid my father. He always told me he would never take a single euro from a club because of his position as vice-president of referees,” he stated.
He explained that the discovery of the payments triggered a serious confrontation at home.
“When I found out he had taken money from Barça, I asked him about it. He became very aggressive and told me: ‘How the f*ck is that any of your business?’”
The court also examined events from 2018, when Negreira lost his role and Barcelona stopped making payments. Shortly after, Negreira sent a letter to then-club president Josep Maria Bartomeu containing a direct warning.
“All will be revealed. If no agreement is reached, everything will come to light. I will do it without hesitation. Your club does not need another scandal,” the letter read.
Negreira added that he had the right to inform the authorities of everything he knew but expressed a preference for reaching a private agreement instead.
“I demand an immediate, highly confidential meeting. If you insist on firing me, I will be forced to reveal everything,” he warned.
