José María Enríquez Negreira’s son, Javier Enríquez Romero, has sought to distance himself from the €8.4 million that his father received from FC Barcelona. He stated that he only earned €60,000 for his own work as a coach. According to sources present during his testimony, Romero emphasized that his father never told him about his ties to Barcelona or the payments he received from the club.

Romero is the only figure in the case who agreed to answer both the prosecution and his defense when he appeared before the judge at Barcelona’s Court of Instruction No. 13. In contrast, former Barça presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep María Bartomeu only responded to questions from their own lawyers.

He explained that while he appeared on the registry of several companies linked to the case—companies that received funds from Barcelona—he had no knowledge of their accounts or the source of the money. Romero claims he only discovered the situation when Spain’s tax authorities launched an investigation, which led to a heated argument with his father.

This new round of statements comes two and a half years after the case was opened, following a complaint by the Prosecutor’s Office over whether the €7.3 million received by Enríquez Negreira from Barça constituted payments intended to influence refereeing decisions in favor of the club.

Until now, the only suspect to appear before the court had been Negreira himself, who testified last March before the symptoms of the dementia he claims to suffer from worsened.

Despite his attempts to distance himself from the scandal, Javier Enríquez Romero is the author of most of the more than 600 referee reports that Barcelona says it commissioned to analyze the profiles of match officials and their decisions in games involving the club.
